Birdseye Maple is not technically its own species of Maple; it is a defect thats found in the grain of some Sugar Maple Trees. It is named “birdseye” because the defect looks like a small bird’s eye (go figure). It is caused by poor growing conditions for the tree; the tree attempts to start new buds, lack of sunlight causes those buds to be aborted and a number of tiny knots remain creating the small “birdseyes.” I’ve found that, in contrast to regular Hard Maple, this wood has a kind of golden shimmer that makes for very beautiful jewelry pieces.
